Safe Communities participates in activities that promote traffic-related safety strategies, such as bike rodeos, car seat clinics, pedestrian safety, and much more.

Making safety a priority in our community

Accomplishments

  • Walk & Bike Event (200 students participated)
  • Ask to present at ODOT’s Safety Conference in Salem (2010)
  • Safety Belt Diversion Classes (working with Hermiston Municipal Courts offers diversion classes monthly)
  • Assisted with recruitment of an instructor for the 55 Alive senior driving program
  • Motorized Wheelchair safety campaign (has served more than 50 seniors with safety education, reflective flags & reflective lights)
  • Teen Driving Presentation (over 700 HHS students in attendance)
  • Bike Rodeos & bike helmet distribution (11 bike rodeos just last year, over 300 helmets fitted on children & adults for safer riding)
  • Car Seat Clinics—teamed up with Safe Kids to offer three car seat clinics
  • Improved railroad crossing on Gettman Road
  • Domestic Violence Car Seat Program (Supplied & fitted caseworker vehicles with car seats for safe traveling “to” & “from” safe house)
  • Townsend Safety Project (in progress)
  • Safety Trailer for Hermiston Fire & EMS (wrote grant & secured funds to purchase safety trailer, as well as equipment)
  • Assisted with crosswalk installation on Elm
  • Worked with Good Shepherd to implement an infant car seat program
  • Improved shrub/brushes near Sandstone Middle School
  • Completed a Safety Directory for community members & professionals
  • Team up with Good Shepherd to offer Safety Saturdays…KOHU radio program that reaches wide audience
  • Numerous presentations to businesses & schools
